USDZAR: Probability of 17.00 Before Month End

Looking at the $USDZAR pair, currently sitting around 16.8248, I've been considering the likelihood of it touching 17.00 before the end of the month. The recent market action hasn't been particularly decisive in either direction, but the underlying sentiment for EM currencies remains somewhat fragile. Inflation concerns in developed markets, coupled with any further hawkish rhetoric from the Fed, could easily put renewed pressure on the Rand.

While South Africa's internal factors are always a wildcard, globally, the risk-off potential feels elevated. If we see any significant shifts in global risk appetite, or perhaps a stronger dollar across the board on continued rate hike expectations, that 17.00 level seems within reach. I'd put the probability of $USDZAR hitting 17.00 by month-end at roughly 60%. It’s not a certainty, but the tailwinds for a stronger dollar seem more plausible than for a significantly stronger Rand in the current environment. We're not seeing the kind of carry-trade enthusiasm that would push it lower against the dollar with any real force right now.

It's an interesting call. While the EM sentiment is fragile, local factors and commodity prices could still offer some resistance around that 17.00 mark. Are you seeing any specific domestic triggers that might push it there, or primarily global macro?

I'm also watching USDZAR closely. While the fragililty of EM currencies is a valid point, I'm wondering how much of that sentiment is already priced in, especially given the range-bound trading we've seen. What specific catalysts do you see pushing it through 16.90 and then to 17.00?
