Lesson learned: Not respecting the daily close on $EURUSD
I've been trading for a while now, and you'd think some lessons stick permanently. A few months back, I got caught up in a short $EURUSD position during a strong intraday rally. My setup was based on a prior daily resistance, and I had what I thought was a decent entry. Problem was, I let the intraday noise override the clear message of the daily candle forming strongly bullish towards the close. Instead of cutting it when the daily close was clearly going to print above my key level, I held, convinced it would reverse. It didn't. The next day gapped up and went further, turning a manageable loss into something considerably more painful.
The takeaway for me was rediscovering the power of higher timeframes, especially the daily close. Intraday price action can be deceptive, and if your HTF reason for being in a trade is invalidated by the close of a significant candle, ignoring it is just asking for trouble. It's a hard reminder that sometimes, the simplest rules are the most important to adhere to, no matter how tempting it is to fight the tape.
That's a classic trap, easy to get caught up in the intraday swings and lose sight of the bigger picture on higher timeframes. It's a constant battle between conviction and adapting to what the market is actually doing.
