Lesson Learned: Not respecting the daily close
Hey everyone, new here. Been trading for about 7 years now, primarily equities and FX. A costly lesson early on was not respecting the daily close for stop-loss management. I'd frequently move a stop-loss just before the market closed, rationalizing that the move was temporary and it would reverse overnight. More often than not, it would gap further against me, turning a manageable loss into a significant draw down.
Now, my rule is firm: if the daily candle closes beyond my predetermined stop, the position is closed, no questions asked. It's saved me from a lot of unnecessary pain and forced me to stick to my original thesis or admit it was wrong sooner. The extra 1% I might gain from holding overnight doesn't justify the potential 10% loss.
That's a tough but common lesson, especially with overnight gaps. Do you find that respecting the daily close has also helped improve your emotional discipline by forcing you to accept the loss more readily?
