Watching the Rand after SA's budget announcement

The South African budget speech yesterday has me looking closely at $USDZAR. While the finance minister struck a relatively optimistic tone, projecting a narrower budget deficit, the underlying structural issues in the economy are still a major headwind. I mean, spending commitments on social grants and state-owned enterprises remain significant, which always makes me question the long-term fiscal health.

Today, $USDZAR is trading around 16.52, down slightly but still elevated. I'm not seeing any immediate impetus for a strong rally in the Rand. The global risk appetite, especially concerning emerging markets, is still fragile. If we see any further softening in commodity prices or a significant shift in the Fed's stance on rates, that could easily push it higher. Keeping this pair on my watch list for a potential long if it breaks above 16.60 convincingly, as the domestic economic picture doesn't look robust enough to provide sustained support.
