That Time NFP Kicked My $EURUSD Stop Like a Soccer Ball
Thought I had a decent read on $EURUSD leading into NFP a few months back. Fundamentals seemed to align, technicals had a nice setup with a clear resistance break. Felt good about the long, especially with the dollar showing some cracks.
Now, my usual play for NFP is to either be flat or scale down significantly. But this time, I had a case of 'convictionitis' – that dangerous affliction where you convince yourself you're smarter than the market for 30 minutes. My stop was in what I considered a 'safe' spot, below a minor structural low, but still within a reasonable risk tolerance for the trade idea before the news. The numbers dropped, and for a glorious 30 seconds, it looked like I was a genius. Then, the inevitable happened: a whipsaw that took out my stop faster than a hummingbird's wings. The pair then reversed sharply and went exactly where I initially thought it would go, just without me. Lesson learned, again, that news events, particularly high-impact ones, often have an initial, irrational reaction before settling into the 'correct' direction. My mistake wasn't necessarily the direction, but holding significant exposure through the initial market tantrum. My stop was technically sound for a normal day, but grossly inadequate for the volatility NFP brings. Paid a tuition fee to the market that day, reminding me that even when you think you're right, respecting the known volatility of certain economic releases is paramount. Sometimes, the best trade is no trade, especially when the referee blows the whistle for kick-off.
Oh man, I totally get that feeling of convictionitis. It's so easy to get sucked into a trade when everything seems to line up, only for a major event like NFP to just blow it up. What indicators do you usually look at for NFP?
