The price of getting cute with stops

Thought I'd share a lesson that cost me a good chunk of profit last week, mainly stemming from trying to be too clever with my stops. I had a decent long position in $EURUSD from early in the move, had scaled out some, and was holding a core. Price action started to consolidate after a strong push, and the previous swing low was still a comfortable distance away. Instead of just trailing my stop below that established low, I decided to tighten it up, placing it just under a recent micro-consolidation, thinking I could re-enter lower if it got tagged.

Well, as you can probably guess, price dipped just enough to take out my 'smart' stop, tagged the liquidity there, and then promptly reversed and continued its original trajectory, pushing significantly higher. I missed out on a solid 70-80 pips on my remaining core position because I moved my stop prematurely based on a short-term wiggle, rather than respecting the broader structure. It wasn't revenge trading, or FOMO into the initial trade, just an attempt to protect paper profits a little too aggressively and losing sight of the primary trend. Costly reminder that sometimes the simplest stop placement is the best, especially when the underlying structure hasn't broken. Patience with a winning trade is key.

This is a great point, and something I've grappled with myself. It's so easy to overthink and adjust when a simple trailing stop would have often done the job better. Thanks for sharing this lesson.

It's a common trap. Often, the simplest approach to stop management is the most effective. Trying to micro-manage them can definitely backfire.

Definitely been there. It's so tempting to try and optimize every little thing, but sometimes the simplest approach is the most effective. How often do you find yourself doing this versus just sticking to a more straightforward trailing stop strategy?
