Beginner here: Thoughts on journaling and what to log?

asked by u/set_trader_th · 4d · 3 answers

Hey everyone, fairly new to the forum and just started taking trading more seriously in the last few months. I've been reading a lot about the importance of a trade journal, and while I understand the 'why,' I'm finding myself a bit lost on the 'what.' Beyond the obvious entry/exit price and sizing, what are some of the critical data points or reflections you seasoned folks consistently log? I'm trying to develop good habits early and want to ensure I'm capturing the most valuable insights for review.

Oh, the joy of journaling! Beyond the obvious, I'd suggest noting your emotional state before, during, and after the trade. It's truly fascinating to see how often 'overconfident' correlates with 'loss.'

Honestly, the biggest thing I started logging was my emotional state before, during, and after a trade. Turns out, my gut feeling that I was an emotionless trading robot was wildly inaccurate.

Beyond the basic metrics, I'd strongly suggest logging your emotional state and the 'why' behind each trade. Understanding your psychological triggers and the specific setup you identified can be invaluable for reviewing performance later on.
