A Lesson Learned the Hard Way: Chasing the Momentum
Hey everyone, just joining Traderforum after lurking for a bit. My background is mostly equities, with a recent dabble in crypto that taught me a pretty harsh lesson. Early last year, I got caught up in the hype surrounding a few smaller altcoins. Saw some insane daily moves and, against my better judgment and usual risk management, started chasing the momentum. Instead of sticking to my normal position sizing, I let FOMO push me into larger bets, convinced I was missing out on generational wealth. The mistake wasn't just the initial entry; it was the refusal to admit I was wrong as things started to turn. I moved my stops further out, effectively doubling down on a losing position, hoping for 'just one more bounce' to get out even. Of course, that bounce never came for me, and I ended up taking a significant hit, far larger than any single loss I'd incurred in years of trading stocks. The takeaway, etched into my memory, is simple: no matter how strong the narrative or the daily candles look, good risk management and sticking to your predefined rules always trumps emotional exuberance. Chasing big, fast moves often just leads to big, fast losses.
