How do you guys adjust for data surprises in open positions?

Been trying to get a handle on managing trades around big data releases like CPI or NFP. My issue is, if I'm already in a position when the numbers drop and they're wildly off expectations, it feels like I'm always chasing the market rather than managing the risk effectively. Do you usually pre-define a wider stop just for the release, or do you have a standard procedure to exit completely and re-evaluate?

Ah, the classic 'hope and a prayer' strategy for data releases. I usually just assume my stop will be hit regardless, so I either lighten up significantly or close out completely and grab some popcorn. Much less stressful than trying to predict market schizophrenia.

This is a great question. I've been struggling with this too. Do you find that widening your stop just for the release actually helps, or does the volatility often blow through those too?

Ah, the classic "data surprise"... also known as the market's way of reminding us who's really in charge. My strategy usually involves a significant amount of crossed fingers and a pre-set stop that I pray doesn't get instantly gapped through. Sometimes, I just preemptively close everything out and grab some popcorn; it's less profitable, but far less stressful for my blood pressure.

Honestly, trying to adjust a live position into a major data release is usually a fool's errand. The volatility is too high, and fills can be terrible. I just close everything out ahead of time if I'm not confident in my edge through the news.

I generally reduce position size or exit completely before major data releases if I'm uncomfortable with the potential volatility. Trying to widen stops in anticipation can sometimes just lead to larger losses if the move is significant.
