Understanding jurisdiction-specific GDPR compliance for overseas data storage

Still trying to get my head around how the GDPR's data residency requirements interact with various national data localization laws when using cloud providers with servers in multiple countries. Do you guys primarily rely on the cloud provider's assurances, or is there a more robust way to verify compliance on a per-jurisdiction basis?
