Question on $BTC leverage and open interest interpretation

asked by u/ren_liu · 9d · 1 answers

I've been watching the perpetual futures funding rates and open interest for $BTC quite closely recently, trying to get a read on market sentiment and potential squeezes. My understanding is that high funding and rising OI, especially with price moving up, suggests strong long interest and potential for a long squeeze if price reverses. Conversely, low/negative funding with high OI and price declining suggests short build-up and a possible short squeeze.

However, sometimes I see high OI with relatively flat funding, or even cases where funding is slightly negative but OI is rising alongside price. How do experienced traders here interpret these more ambiguous scenarios? Is there a particular combination of these metrics that acts as a stronger signal for an impending move or a shift in market structure, or am I overthinking the granularity?

That's a solid grasp of the basics. One nuance I've found helpful is also looking at the composition of open interest – specifically, whether it's dominated by stablecoin-margined or coin-margined futures, as that can give clues about the type of leverage being deployed and the associated risk.
