Lesson Learned: The Danger of Moving Stops on a Gapping Stock

I still remember a few years back, holding a decent position in a mid-cap tech stock that had been consolidating nicely. Earnings came out pre-market, and it gapped down hard, well past my initial stop. Instead of just taking the hit, I moved my stop lower, thinking it would bounce back to fill the gap. It didn't. The stock continued to crater throughout the day, and I ended up losing significantly more than I ever intended, all because I couldn't admit I was wrong and stick to my original plan. It was a painful, expensive lesson about respecting your initial risk parameters, especially with gappers.
