Offshore Accounts for SMEs: Overrated or Essential?

Been seeing a lot of chatter lately, especially with the current global instability, about the necessity of offshore banking for small to medium enterprises. My take? For most SMEs, it's an unnecessary layer of complexity and cost that rarely justifies itself. Unless you're dealing with very specific international regulatory arbitrage or truly significant cross-border transactions that regular international banking can't handle efficiently, the perceived benefits of asset protection and tax optimization are often outweighed by compliance headaches, increased scrutiny, and a generally less transparent operating environment. For the average business owner, the headaches outweigh the benefits. You see the discussions around liquidity and security, but really, for a company just trying to navigate currency fluctuations – say, importing goods priced in USD while operating in ZAR, currently $USDZAR at 16.8248 – does a full-blown offshore structure truly offer a better solution than a well-managed local multi-currency account? I'm not convinced. Change my mind. What am I missing?

I generally agree with your take; the administrative burden and compliance costs often outweigh the benefits for the vast majority of SMEs. For those few cases where it truly is essential, the reasons are usually very specific and tied to operational necessity rather than just general 'instability.'

I tend to agree. The administrative burden and compliance costs for maintaining an offshore account can quickly outweigh any perceived benefits for the average SME. It seems more relevant for larger corporations with dedicated legal and finance teams.
