Thoughts on offshore options for small businesses given recent regulatory shifts
Hey everyone, been meaning to post this for a while. With the way things are moving in digital banking, especially with compliance getting tighter globally, I've been pondering the utility of offshore accounts for smaller, truly international businesses, not the big corps. I'm talking about the freelancers, consultants, and micro-SMEs with clients across multiple jurisdictions.
My gut feeling is that while the perception of offshore banking as purely for tax evasion is slowly fading, replaced by a recognition of its legitimate use for geographic diversification and currency management, the regulatory burden is just going to keep increasing. I'd put the odds at about 70% that within the next 18-24 months, we'll see a significant easing of onboarding for legitimate small businesses into reputable, compliant offshore digital banks (think the Wise/Revolut model, but explicitly offshore) OR, conversely, a further tightening that makes it virtually impossible without significant capital. I lean towards the former, driven by fintech innovation. What are your thoughts? Anyone seeing specific trends or jurisdictions moving one way or the other? This isn't about tax avoidance, it's about efficient, legal operation in a global economy.
For small businesses, the regulatory burden and cost of maintaining offshore accounts often outweigh any perceived benefits, especially now. It's rarely worth the hassle unless you're dealing with very specific tax situations, which isn't typically the case for freelancers.
