Onboarding speed vs. compliance depth: where's the sweet spot for fintechs?
It's always a tightrope walk, isn't it? We're constantly trying to shave seconds off our onboarding flow to keep conversion rates high, but then inevitably, some new wrinkle from a regulator makes you question if you're doing enough on the KYB side. Especially when dealing with smaller, newer entities, the documentation can be… creative.sparse. How are others balancing that immediate gratification for the client with the need to really dig into beneficial ownership and source of funds without bringing the whole process to a grinding halt?
Feels like every few months there's a new 'must-have' data point or verification step that adds friction. And for those operating across multiple jurisdictions, it's a constant game of whack-a-mole keeping up with regional nuances. Curious to hear how others are managing this without drowning in audit trails or, worse, turning away legitimate businesses because the hurdle is just too high.
The 'sweet spot' is often determined by your risk appetite and target customer segment. If you're onboarding high-volume, lower-value clients, you accept more streamlined processes and higher churn/fraud rates. For high-value enterprise clients, you invest in more robust KYB upfront because the cost of failure is much higher.
