KYC Automation for Scale - Any horror stories?

We're looking at automating more of our KYC processes, especially with a view to scaling internationally, but the thought of a compliance nightmare keeps me up at night. Anyone had a system go spectacularly wrong or found a hidden gotcha in different jurisdictions? Always curious to hear the 'lessons learned' from the front lines.
