KYC Automation for Scale vs. Depth of Due Diligence

It's always a balancing act, isn't it? As fintech platforms scale rapidly, the pressure to automate KYC and onboarding processes becomes immense. From an operational perspective, straight-through processing is the holy grail – faster onboarding, better user experience, lower costs. However, I'm finding myself increasingly concerned about how this push for automation might impact the quality and depth of due diligence, especially when dealing with complex corporate structures or entities in high-risk jurisdictions.

We're seeing a lot of vendors offer incredible tech that can perform rapid checks, verify documents, and screen against sanction lists almost instantly. But there's a subtle difference between speed and thoroughness. Are these automated systems truly catching the more sophisticated red flags, or are they optimized to clear the majority of low-risk cases quickly, potentially leaving us vulnerable to the outliers? What are others in the space doing to ensure that while they're scaling efficiently, they're not inadvertently compromising on their AML obligations? It feels like we're constantly evaluating where the line is between necessary friction for compliance and friction that hinders legitimate growth.

The drive for efficiency is understandable, but overlooking the 'quality' aspect of due diligence seems like a short-sighted strategy. Regulators eventually catch up, and the cost of remediation often far exceeds the initial savings from aggressive automation.
