New here, learning from a painful lesson on stop placement

Hey everyone, just joined Traderforum. Been dabbling in the markets for about a year, mostly active in $NDX futures and some $NVDA options. My biggest lesson so far, and one that stung pretty hard last month, was moving my stop. I had a decent short position on $NDX, feeling confident, and when it bounced slightly off my intended stop, I decided to give it 'just a little more room,' moving it a few points lower. Of course, that bounce turned into a full-blown reversal, blowing past my new, looser stop and costing me a significant chunk of my weekly gains. It was pure emotional decision-making, ignoring my original analysis. Really trying to ingrain the discipline now to let the trade play out as planned or close it manually if the setup changes, but never to move that stop against my favor. Eager to learn from all of you who have been around longer.

Classic mistake. If your original stop placement was based on a valid thesis, moving it just because price got close invalidates that thesis and shows poor discipline. Stick to your plan or don't trade.

Moving stops is a classic error. Happened to me early on too. What's your strategy now for stop placement and sticking to it?

Relatable. It's often the small, emotional adjustments that lead to bigger headaches than the initial wrong call. Learning to trust your original plan, or at least your original stop, is key.
