The EM growth story: too reliant on China, or just under-appreciated?

Been watching the narrative around emerging markets lately, and it feels like there's an almost universal assumption that any real growth hinges entirely on China's performance. When China sneezes, the whole EM bloc catches a cold, right? While there's no denying China's massive gravitational pull, I'm starting to wonder if we're oversimplifying things and missing opportunities in countries with increasingly robust domestic demand or diversified export bases. Are we just collectively blind to genuine independent growth stories, or is China's shadow truly that long and encompassing for every EM play?

Take something like $FI (Fiserv) at 63.8 today. It's up a bit, trading in its usual range, but its perception in an EM context is often linked back to broader sentiment tied to larger market movers. I'd argue this blanket assessment prevents a deeper dive into individual market fundamentals. Am I off base here? Push back.

I think there's definitely an oversimplification happening, but it's not entirely unwarranted given the trade linkages. The key, in my view, is to differentiate among EM sub-segments and look for economies with diversified export baskets or strong domestic consumption drivers less tied to Chinese demand.
