Decentralized KYC/AML solutions – pipe dream or looming necessity for DeFi?

Been pondering the regulatory tightrope act DeFi is constantly performing. With traditional finance increasingly scrutinizing crypto, especially in the wake of recent high-profile collapses, how long until the 'anonymous by default' aspect of many protocols becomes a major liability? Are any of the decentralized identity solutions genuinely getting traction with regulators, or is it all just whistling past the graveyard until the hammer drops regarding KYC/AML on-chain?

It's a pipe dream to think regulators will ever fully embrace decentralized KYC without a central choke point. They want control, not just 'trust, but verify' on the blockchain. Any traction is likely PR, not actual regulatory acceptance.
