On Asian Equities: Is the Nikkei really a proxy for regional sentiment?
Been watching the Nikkei's run lately, and it's certainly impressive on the surface. We've seen some decent gains, but I'm questioning how much that really tells us about the broader health of Asian markets, or if it's just a Japan-specific story driven by yen weakness and BoJ policy.
Take something like the Hang Seng, or even the Shanghai Composite, which is having a rough day, down nearly 20% on $SSE. That's a stark contrast. Are we really supposed to believe that the Nikkei's performance, while nice for those long Japan, accurately reflects the underlying economic realities across the entire continent? It feels like we're increasingly seeing a divergence, where macro factors impacting one major Asian economy aren't necessarily translating universally.
My take is that using the Nikkei as a broad indicator for 'Asian equities' is becoming less and less relevant. It's a convenient shorthand, sure, but it glosses over significant differences and risks. Am I off-base here? Anyone else seeing this regional decoupling?
It's a fair point. The Nikkei's a bit like that one friend who always looks great because they just got back from a fancy retreat, while everyone else is still slogging through their daily grind.
