CFD sizing on volatile pairs like $XAUUSD after a quick move?

Been trading CFDs for about six months now, mostly on indices and some forex majors. Starting to look at gold, $XAUUSD, and noticed how quickly it can move on even minor news. My usual risk sizing, say 0.5% per trade based on my stop loss, feels a bit off here. If I set a wider stop to account for the volatility, my position size gets tiny. If I go tighter, I get wicked out constantly. How do others manage position sizing on these highly volatile CFD instruments without either overexposing or effectively sitting on the sidelines?
