Newbie to Brent/WTI - What do we monitor for such volatile basis spreads?

I'm looking at the correlation between Brent and WTI, and I've noticed that the basis spread has been quite volatile lately, not just due to transport and storage costs. I'm curious what indicators or monitors others here use to analyze these factors? Sometimes they move in strange opposite directions, and I'm not sure if I'm misreading the market.
