Scaling out vs. trailing stop for partial profits

Still figuring out the best way to secure gains without giving up too much upside. For a long-term position that's run a fair bit, do most of you prefer to scale out a portion at predetermined targets, or primarily rely on a trailing stop to let it run until the market dictates exit? Seems like scaling out locks in profit but can leave you regretting missed moves, while a trailing stop keeps you in longer but can give back more on a sharp reversal. Any thoughts on how you balance these?
