Lesson Learned: The Cost of Chasing a Breakout in WTI

Looking back a few years to a specific WTI setup that sticks with me. Price had been coiling for a while, showing clear resistance around the $60 mark. I'd been watching it patiently, looking for a strong move, ideally a clean break and retest. The initial thrust above $60 felt convincing – volume spiked, candles were strong. My mistake? I didn't wait for confirmation on the retest. I jumped in almost immediately on the breakout candle's close, convinced this was 'the' move.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but the market didn't care about my conviction. It ran up another dollar or so, then reversed sharply, dropping back below $60. My stop, which I'd placed just below the breakout level, was hit swiftly. To add insult to injury, it then wicked down another 50 cents before bouncing hard and eventually breaking out properly the next day. The lesson wasn't just about waiting for a retest, but about understanding that often, the 'obvious' move can be a trap for those impatient enough to chase it. That quick dollar-and-a-half run on the initial breakout cost me a few hundred ticks, and more importantly, it meant I missed the actual, sustainable move because I'd already taken a loss on the fakeout. Patience truly is a virtue in these markets.
