When I learned what a 'dead cat bounce' really looked like in oil

Back in the depths of 2020, when $WTI was doing its best impression of a falling anvil, I remember seeing a sharp bounce off what I thought must be the bottom. My indicators, my gut, my horoscope, they all screamed 'buy the dip!' I sized in, feeling quite clever, only for the bounce to prove utterly fleeting, leaving me holding a rather heavy bag as it sank further. It was a painful, but excellent, reminder that even in commodities, some bounces are just the market taking a breather before resuming its original, often brutal, trajectory.
