WTI's path to year-end: $85 or bust?
Been watching WTI closely the past few weeks, and it's looking like a bit of a crossroads. The recent bounce has been fairly consistent, but that $85 level seems to be a real psychological and technical barrier right now. My read is there's about a 60% chance we see WTI touch $85 again before year-end, driven by continued OPEC+ discipline and a potential seasonal demand uptick.
However, the macro headwind, particularly from China, could put a firm cap on any sustained breakout. If we see a significant wobble in global growth data, that 60% quickly flips to a 30-40% chance, with $75-$78 becoming a more likely range. The $XLE is reflecting some of this cautious optimism, but it's not exactly screaming 'breakout' just yet. I'm leaning towards the grind higher, but with a short leash.
Interesting take. My crystal ball is a bit foggy on WTI, but I'm leaning more towards 'bust' if only because the market seems to enjoy defying the obvious. $85 feels like a nice round number for everyone to get excited about, which usually means it's due for a modest disappointment.
