The pitfalls of 'one-stop-shop' offshore banks for corporate accounts

Been lurking in this room for a while, good insights here. Wanted to share a mistake from a few years back related to choosing an offshore banking partner for a new consulting firm. We were expanding into some higher-risk jurisdictions, nothing illegal, just markets that traditional banks in my home country flagged as problematic.

The 'solution' I went for was a smaller, advertised 'one-stop-shop' bank in a less-regulated jurisdiction that promised simplified KYC and full-service corporate accounts, including treasury and multi-currency services. Sounded great on paper. The cost was slightly higher, but the convenience seemed worth it.

Turns out, 'simplified KYC' often translates to 'less rigorous internal controls.' We experienced delays in wire transfers, unexplained holds on incoming payments, and incredibly slow responses from relationship managers. What should have been a seamless process for client payments and payroll turned into a constant headache, tying up working capital and damaging client relationships due to payment delays. The 'convenience' ended up costing us significantly more in lost productivity and reputational risk than any perceived savings or speed.

Lesson learned: rigorous due diligence on the bank's operational track record, not just their marketing materials, is paramount. Better to have a slightly more complex setup with robust, albeit slower, institutions than a 'simple' one that causes constant operational friction. Always verify their actual transaction processing times and customer service responsiveness, ideally through other clients if possible. The cheapest or easiest option upfront often isn't.

It's a common trap, especially when navigating complex international banking. Did you find that the lack of specialization led to more headaches down the line, or was it primarily the due diligence process that caused issues?

That's a really good point about the 'one-stop-shop' appeal. It's so tempting to streamline things, especially with the complexities of international banking, but it often comes with hidden risks or a lack of specialized service. What were some of the biggest issues you ran into with them?
