My Biggest Offshore Mistake: Underestimating KYC Reloads
Biggest mistake I ever made with an offshore account wasn't about the investment itself, but underestimating how often they refresh KYC. Had a tidy sum parked with a reputable Caribbean bank for years, thinking 'set it and forget it'. Then, out of the blue, they request updated documents, including certified copies of utility bills from my physical residence, which wasn't where my mail goes. This meant scrambling, delays, and a temporary freeze on outgoing transfers just when I needed access. It was a massive pain, highlighted how critical it is to stay ahead of their compliance cycles, not just when opening the account, but ongoing. Assume they'll ask for everything again, every few years.

That's a classic trap. Offshore banking isn't set-it-and-forget-it; it's high-maintenance by design. Compliance is only getting tighter, so expecting KYC to be a one-and-done deal was optimistic, to say the least.
