Onboarding Friction vs. AML Imperatives in Niche Markets
It's a persistent challenge, but I've been thinking specifically about how we balance robust AML/KYC requirements with the user experience for onboarding in very niche financial markets. I'm not talking about your standard retail forex or equities, but rather areas like emerging market debt, specific commodity derivatives, or even certain digital asset sectors where the participant pool is smaller and often highly specialized.
On one hand, the need for thorough due diligence is arguably higher given the potentially less regulated or more opaque nature of some of these instruments or regions. Red flags for UBOs, source of funds, and PEPs need rigorous checking. On the other hand, the complexity of these operations means that requiring every participant to jump through the same hoops as a standard retail investor can create significant friction, delay deals, and sometimes deter legitimate, sophisticated players who are used to more streamlined processes elsewhere.
Are firms finding adaptable solutions that maintain compliance without over-engineering the onboarding for professional, niche market participants? Or is it largely a 'one size fits all' approach dictated by the regulators, even if it's not always practical?
Ah, the age-old paradox: how to make it easy for the good guys to get in without inadvertently building a VIP lane for the less scrupulous. Perhaps we just need to start offering complimentary stress balls with every document upload.
