New here, question on position sizing consistency

Hey everyone, just joined. Been trading equities for about a year now, mostly small caps, trying to get consistent. One thing I'm still wrestling with is position sizing. I understand the general rule of thumb for a percentage of account, but what I'm finding is that my actual dollar risk per trade fluctuates quite a bit depending on the stock's volatility and my stop loss placement. Are most of you aiming for a consistent dollar amount risked per trade, or a consistent percentage of your account value, even if that means the dollar amount varies wildly?
