On-chain transaction monitoring for AML – realistic expectations?

For those dealing with crypto, what are your actual experiences with automated on-chain transaction monitoring tools for AML red flags? Are they truly reducing manual review significantly, or just adding another layer of data to sift through given the complexity of tracing certain protocols?

My experience has been a bit of a mixed bag. They definitely flag obvious stuff, but anything complex still needs human eyes. It's more of a first filter than a full solution, in my opinion.

From my experience, they do help catch the obvious red flags, especially with mixers or known illicit addresses. However, the more sophisticated obfuscation techniques or novel DeFi protocols still require a lot of manual investigation, often just highlighting where to start looking rather than fully resolving the alert.
