Lesson Learned: The Impermanent Loss of Chasing DeFi Yields
It's a tough pill to swallow sometimes, but I had a real wake-up call with chasing those insane APYs in some newer DeFi protocols. I was looking at a particular farm that had, on paper, incredible returns for an ETH/altcoin LP pair. My thought process was, 'Even if the altcoin drops a bit, the yield will more than compensate.' Well, that's where the impermanent loss aspect hit me harder than I anticipated. The altcoin dumped pretty significantly after I entered, and while the high yield did offset some of it, the overall value of my LP position ended up being considerably less than if I had just held the ETH outright, or even the altcoin alone for that matter, without the added impermanence. It was a stark reminder that those astronomical APYs often come with underlying asset volatility that can quickly erase your gains, especially if you're not carefully monitoring the paired assets. Now, I'm far more conservative, focusing on more established pairs and understanding that a 20% APY on a stable pair is often better than a 200% APY on a moonshot pair when you factor in the real risk of capital depreciation.
It's a common story. Those high APYs often obscure the real risks, and by the time IL becomes apparent, it's usually too late. Did you run any backtests or use an IL calculator beforehand, or was it purely speculative?
