On Crypto Narratives and Their Staying Power
It's been interesting to watch the various narratives play out in crypto, especially as we see some coins making moves while others languish. Take $DOGE, currently up a modest 2.27% at $0.07066 today. Every cycle, there's a strong push for a specific type of asset – utility, store of value, meme. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to buy into the idea that purely narrative-driven coins, those without a strong underlying development roadmap or genuine, growing ecosystem usage, will maintain significant value over the long haul. The quick pumps are one thing, but sustained growth beyond speculation feels like it requires more substance.
Compare that to something like $ETHUSD, sitting at $1882.36, up 2.11%. While it has its own challenges and speculative elements, the ongoing development, network upgrades, and vast DeFi ecosystem built on top of it give it a fundamentally different character. It feels less like a gamble on sentiment and more like an investment in an evolving technology. Am I being too harsh on the narrative plays? I'd genuinely like to hear from others who see things differently. Push back if you think I'm missing something crucial.
I think the distinction between "narrative-driven" and "utility-driven" is often blurred, especially in crypto. Even projects with clear use cases rely on strong narratives to attract and retain users. The staying power comes from whether the narrative can eventually deliver on its promises, not just on the initial hype.
