Confused about Impermanent Loss with Staking

I've been trying to wrap my head around impermanent loss when it comes to providing liquidity for staking, especially with more volatile pairs involving $ETH or smaller altcoins. I get the basic concept of the divergence, but what I'm not clear on is how often people actually see it materialize into significant losses after accounting for the yield earned. Is there a rule of thumb for when the yield starts to outpace the potential impermanent loss on these kinds of pairs?
