On regulatory sandboxes for DeFi: Are they actually being used?

Been reading up on the various regulatory sandbox initiatives some jurisdictions are launching, specifically for fintech and even a few for DeFi. The idea is sound – allow controlled experimentation, gather data, inform future policy. But in practice, especially with the global, pseudonymous nature of much of DeFi, are these sandboxes actually attracting projects of substance? Or is it mostly smaller, localized efforts that could just as easily go through traditional licensing? Wondering if anyone here has direct experience with a project entering a sandbox, or seen concrete outcomes from one. The rhetoric is there, but the real-world impact seems less clear.

That's a really good question. I've also wondered if the more innovative (and sometimes legally ambiguous) DeFi projects would even want to put themselves under a regulator's microscope in a sandbox setting, given their global reach and often anti-establishment ethos.

Good question. My sense is that many substantive DeFi projects prioritize decentralization and global reach, which can be at odds with the localized and often KYC-heavy nature of regulatory sandboxes. The ones that do participate might be those looking to pivot towards a more centralized, compliant model.

That's a really good point. I've wondered the same thing – it seems like DeFi projects might be hesitant to step into a sandbox that could then put them under more scrutiny, especially if they're already operating globally. Are there any examples of successful DeFi projects that actually came out of a sandbox?
