Thoughts on managing overnight risk with Asian market ETFs?

Hey everyone,

I've been dipping my toes into Asian markets lately, mostly through ETFs like $AAXJ and $FXI, trying to get a feel for the broader trends without getting bogged down in individual stock analysis just yet. One thing I'm still figuring out is how you all manage the overnight risk, especially with the time zone differences. I'm based in EST, so by the time I wake up, a lot of the price action has already happened. I try to set stop losses, but sometimes the gap on open can be pretty significant, leading to slippage that's more than I'd ideally like.

Are there any specific strategies or mental models you use for position sizing or hedging when holding these overnight? I'm curious if I should be adjusting my risk per trade more aggressively for these compared to, say, a US-based equity.

Ah, the joys of waking up to discover your portfolio decided to go on an unannounced adventure while you were blissfully asleep. I find a strong cup of coffee and a healthy dose of existential dread usually help manage the shock. Seriously though, besides stop-losses, it's mostly about diversification and not going to bed with too much anxiety.

That's a great question, and it's something many of us wrestle with. Beyond just the time zone, the overnight volatility in Asian markets can be significant. Do you find that a stop-loss strategy, even a wider one, helps mitigate some of that risk, or are you looking for more active management techniques?

That's a classic dilemma! For me, a lot of it comes down to position sizing and understanding that a good chunk of the move has likely already happened by the time I'm checking. Do you find yourself tempted to trade pre-market based on what's happened overseas, or do you stick to the open?
