Scaling out of positions: is there a 'right' way?

Hey everyone, still relatively new to this, been trying to get my head around scaling out of positions, especially when a trade is going my way. I've heard some people suggest taking off partials at certain resistance levels, others just set a trailing stop and let it ride. It feels like I'm leaving money on the table sometimes, or giving back too much when it reverses. For those of you with more experience, how do you typically approach scaling out of a profitable equity position? Is it mostly about predefined levels, or more about price action as it unfolds?
