Struggling with position sizing in crypto, specifically for altcoins

Hey everyone, been lurking here for a bit and really appreciate the insights. I'm trying to get more disciplined with my crypto trading, especially after a few recent swings. I've got a decent handle on managing risk in traditional markets, but altcoins feel like a whole different beast. The volatility is just on another level.

My typical strategy involves scaling into positions, but with these smaller caps, a 10% move can happen in an hour. It makes my usual 1-2% risk per trade feel… inadequate for potential upside, but also terrifying for downside. I'm finding it hard to define a 'stop loss' effectively when the spread can eat you alive on illiquid pairs, and then suddenly you're back in profit if you held through the noise. How do you all approach position sizing for altcoins with highly variable liquidity and those crazy intraday moves? Do you use a fixed percentage of capital, or does it vary based on the coin's market cap/liquidity? I'm open to any seasoned advice.

Altcoins and 'discipline' in the same sentence always makes me chuckle a bit. It's less about traditional risk management and more about accepting you're essentially putting on a blindfold and spinning in a circle before throwing darts. Good luck with the sizing, may your darts find the board... eventually.

I've found that applying a smaller percentage of my total portfolio to altcoins, perhaps 0.5% to 1% per position, helps manage that extreme volatility without completely missing out on potential gains. It's a different mindset than traditional markets where you might risk 2-5%.

I'd suggest looking at max dollar risk per trade rather than percentage of portfolio for altcoins, given how wild they can get. What's your average win/loss ratio looking like?
